Objective. Finding out the results of using two kinds of mesh implants: self-gripping mesh implants and polypropylene mesh fixed by tacks in open inguinal hernioplasty by Liechtenstein focusing on the way of mesh fixation. Material and methods. Our study was conducted upon 100 patients with inguinal hernia, which were divided into two equal groups (no=50). AdhesixTM self-gripping mesh implants was utilized in the first group, while polypropylene mesh implants fixed by elastic absorb tack fixing device were used in the second group. The duration of the operation, quantity of hospital stays (beds/ day), postoperative complications and complications during the short-term follow-up were estimated. Results. Self-gripping mesh implants were superior to polypropylene mesh fixed by elastic tacks regarding operative time (8 min-utes less), incidence of post-operative pain (28% less) and also foreign body sensation (34% less) during the short-term follow-up. Conclusion. We can recommend using self-gripping mesh in practice when the choice of surgeon well be between self-gripping mesh and polypropylene mesh fixed by tacks. © 2024, Media Sphera Publishing Group.
