The impact of innovation models and intellectual property protection on R&D innovation in biopharmaceutical companies: an international comparison

This study analyzed the annual R&D investment and output results (number of new drug approvals) of biopharmaceutical companies in the United States and China under the protection of intellectual property rights, which in turn promotes R&D innovation (R&D investment), and found the differences between innovation models and intellectual property protection. Integration is critical for businesses to continue to innovate. There are differences in innovation models and intellectual property protection policies between mature markets and emerging markets. Open innovation models such as industry-university-research cooperation and technology licensing are conducive to accelerating innovation, while strict patent protection and data exclusivity protection can improve corporate innovation motivation. The study suggests that the government should improve relevant policies, and companies should carefully choose an innovation model that suits them and strengthen their awareness of intellectual property protection. The combination of the two is crucial for enterprises to continue to innovate. This study also pointed out the limitations and in-depthness of the case analysis, and the scope and perspective of the cases can be expanded in the future.
