The study examines factors associated with the overall level of individual life dissatisfaction. Based on the data from the Russian Monitoring of Economic Situation and Health of the National Research University Higher School of Economics (RLMSHSE) for the period from 1994 to 2021, the author analyzes dissatisfaction with life depending on sociodemographic, behavioral, and other characteristics among respondents aged 15 years and older. In 2021, the majority of Russians were satisfied with life (52.1 %), average positions were noted by 31.0 % of the respondents, every fifth was dissatisfied with life (19.1 % of men and 22.6 % of women). Analysis based on logistic regression showed that dissatisfaction with life is primarily associated with aging and economic status of the respondent. The most significant factor of life dissatisfaction is the presence of disability. Physical activity and the presence of loved ones (spouse and children) are positively associated with life satisfaction. Analysis of data from 2011 to 2021 revealed a generally stable composition of the factors significantly associated with life dissatisfaction. However, factors such as the type of settlement (namely, living in rural area) or adherence to faith at some periods lose their significance. The greatest risk for a person is being in a state of dissatisfaction for a long time: every tenth person is not satisfied with life for two years in a row, and 6.5 % of the respondents are not satisfied with life for three years in a row. People who are dissatisfied with life tend to assess negatively both their present and future situations. © 2023 Russian Public Opinion Research Center, VCIOM. All rights reserved.
