The essay deals with the earliest and most controversial tragedy by William Shakespeare - “Titus Andronicus” - which has been haunting the literary scholars with its gory atmosphere, sheer barbarity of the characters' thoughts and actions and crudeness of the verse. For centuries the critics have tried to eliminate this doubtful writing from the highly praised canon of Shakespeare's elevated, “ennobled” tragedies, while an unprejudiced reader could easily discern in “Titus” the promise of the Bard's oncoming artistic achievements and discoveries. The essay summarizes the attempts of the Western and Russian scholars to discredit the play through its doubtful attribution and low artistic quality, not deserving the Shakespearean level.
