The most characteristic feature of the French novel of the late 20th century is its renovation, a search for hybrid forms. The tendency towards the so-called "autofi ction" has changed the nature of the novel. "Autofi ction" is determined by Lacan's idea of the sign as asimulacrum meaning; we trace here disappearance of a borderline between the author's discourse about himself, his narration about life and fi ction. This phenomenon is represented by P. Michon in his novel "Rimbaud le fi ls" and by G. Masse in "Le Denier de Egyptiens". The creative work of J. Echenoz, with his erosion of senses, the impotence of language and the power of virtuality over contemporary consciousness is symbolic of the main tendencies of the French literature of the 90s of the 20th century.
