Background. Blockchain technology is a decentralized, distributed ledger that is used to record transactions across a network of computers. The most common consensus mechanism used in blockchain networks is the Proof of Work (PoW) algorithm, which is used by networks such as Bitcoin and Ethereum. However, PoW is energy-intensive and can lead to centralization, which has led to the development of alternative consensus mechanisms such as Proof of Stake (PoS). Purpose. The objective of this study is to investigate the practical role of transitioning from the PoW algorithm to PoS in blockchain networks. This includes evaluating the benefits and drawbacks of PoS, assessing the costs associated with transitioning to PoS, and identifying any challenges or risks that may be encountered during the transition. Materials and Methods. This scoping review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA-ScR recommendations for the search and selection of studies. The search was conducted on the popular scientific databases ResearchGate and IEEEXplore. The researchers found 237 articles on related topics and selected 42 of them. Studies published in English from January 1, 2014, ending to January 13, 2023, were viewed. Results. The results of this study indicate that transitioning from PoW to PoS can lead to significant energy savings and improved network performance. However, the transition also comes with certain challenges and risks, such as the need for significant upgrades to existing infrastructure and the potential for centralization. The survey results show that experts believe that PoS is a more sustainable and efficient consensus mechanism, but that more research is needed to fully understand its potential implications. Conclusion. The transition from PoW to PoS is a complex process that requires careful planning and execution. The results of this study suggest that PoS has the potential to offer significant benefits, but that there are also risks and challenges associated with the transition. Further research is needed to fully understand the implications of transitioning to PoS and to identify strategies for addressing the challenges and risks involved.
